Our school

Calamvale Special School is a school for students in prep, primary, and secondary (5 to 17 years old) who have intellectual and other disabilities. It is located in Brisbane’s south in the Metropolitan Region of Department of Education. The student catchment area is geographically very large, spreading from Algester, Forestdale, Stretton and Beaudesert. Eligible students travel to school via taxi or mini bus.

The school caters for about 120 school aged students and  10 students of pre-compulsory age. All students have been identified as requiring significant educational support arising from intellectual impairment and other disabilities. The guiding principle for our school is all children have an inalienable right to an education. We achieve this aim through caring and professional staff members offering a curriculum which caters for all ability groups, taking into consideration their range of individual needs and abilities.

The school team comprises administration staff, teachers, teacher aides, and part-time specialists including a guidance officer, a physiotherapist, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist, and a nurse, to enable students with high educational and medical needs to receive an education within a school program with their peers. Specialists visiting the school include advisory visiting teachers for hearing impairment and vision impairment.

Our school offers students the opportunity to learn in small class groups. Each student has an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) that documents individual goals negotiated by the staff in consultation with the parents and stakeholders in all curriculum areas. Individual goals are based on developing the student’s effective communication, literacy, numeracy, social and personal independence skills.

At Calamvale Special School we provide students with multiple opportunities to achieve and consolidate their learning by incorporating the learning areas of the Australian curriculum and the Queensland Curriculum to Classroom within the school curriculum planning process.

It is Calamvale Special School's aim for every student to exit their schooling with a communication system. All students are encouraged to become as independent as possible, working towards achieving our school motto 'To Learn, To Live, To Grow'.
